Decorating an Ikea Kallax Shelf

Decorating an Ikea Kallax Shelf

If you guys know me at all, you’ll know that interior design and decorating is my absolute JAM. Ever since I was little, I used to design the inside of my dollhouses and call myself Martha Stewart. It’s always been a hobby and passion of mine, and I find myself switching out my interior decor on a regular basis to get a fresh perspective. One thing I absolutely love to decorate is my Ikea Kallax shelf- well- my DIY Ikea Kallax shelf. My stepdad actually made me this shelf so it was not store bought, but it looks exactly like the real deal. The reason for the custom approach was because I hadn’t seen Ikea sell the 3×3 in a very long time.. I was so used to seeing the 4×4 and 6×6. My room is smaller than the average bedroom so I knew I needed to make it work space-wise. I absolutely love the way it turned out and I’ve had it for a little over 2 years now! If you’re interested in how it was made and how I first designed it in my bedroom, checkout my video here .In decorating my Kallax shelf, I kept in mind the colour scheme I wanted to have, which is the general colour scheme of my entire room ( Gold, white, grey, and touches of black and blush pink). So I kept my kallax a clean white colour so that it would go with anything and everything I decided to add to it. *ALL PRODUCTS LINKED IN TEXT*

Above my Ikea kallax I have one of my favourite assets to my room which is just my gold Luckies scratch map. I love this scratch map as I’ve mentioned so many times, because I love traveling and love to scratch off all the places I’ve been. I also just have a few little cute things hanging off my map – polaroid pictures of me and my friends and a little note from my sister.

Moving to the top part of my kallax, I have this beautiful jewelry holder that I got from Winners for $14 that holds all my necklaces and earrings, and in the bottom I keep some small bracelets and watches, as well as some of my favourite pearl clips. Beside that I just keep some of the books I’ve been reading lately, kind of stacked on top of each other- the colours of these books happen to go with the colour scheme of my room, so it works out well! lol. I have a mini Bible, and I LOVE reading business and social media books- so I have a lot of those in my room. On top, I just have this beautiful gold vase that I use to hold my liquid lipsticks and lipliners in, as well as some perfume and this adorable little gold bird paperweight that my mom gave me from Umbra.

On this side, I have this super cute picture frame that looks like a camera that my dad got me from Winners. Beside that I just have this little tray that Stefan got me, and on top of it, a candle (because I love candles. Especially Yankee Candles) and some other cute little face and makeup products. Ive been really loving this Congrats candle that my mom got me last year for my graduation- it smells like sprinkles and funnel cake- literally. I also have a little tray that holds my sunglasses and business card holder, so I can just take them and put them in whichever bag I’m choosing to take for the day.

Moving on to my little cubes- I change these up so often, especially with the seasons so this is kind of my everyday layout. I try and mix the warm tones of the golds and browns with the cool tones of grey and white and splashes of blush. In my first cube I have this Film reel that my dad gave me, beside that I just have this Kate spade box that I repurposed into a box that holds some of my planner supplies, some stationary and extra polaroid film. On top is just a little box that holds some of my scrunchies and hair ties, a little brownie camera and a little ring holder that I got from my sister from Michaels!

Beside that is one of my favourite parts to my kallax, which is the sign that my dad gave me that says ” You have my whole heart for my whole life”, it’s super special to me because me and my dad have a really close relationship. On this little sign, I also have these tiny bottles of sand from some of the places I’ve been, since I collect sand from wherever I go!

Moving downwards on my cubicle, I have this adorable frame that has a picture of me and my boyfriend Stefan in it. Stefan actually made this for me for our anniversary last year and it CHARGES your phone. I basically just plug the frame in to the wall behind my kallax, pop my phone onto the frame of the picture frame and it will charge my phone like a standing charger- so super cool. I could’ve never made this myself so I’m glad his techs self was able to make me this lol. I also have this cool silver camera that my dad gave me that sits beside my picture frame. Next cube over, I have some of my favourite larger coffee table books ( since my room doesn’t have space yet for an actual coffee table…) and it also has my 2 favourite photo albums that have pictures of my travels, and pictures with friends and family in them. My Eiffel Tower bookends (I’m only using one in this photo) are from Marshalls, and I love them! Ive been thinking about spray painting them gold but let me know what you think 😉

Beside that cubicle, I have this beautiful wooden Parisian box that I keep my planner, planner supplies, stickers, sticky notes, thank you cards etc.. in. I also keep some smaller candles at the back as well as my candle lighter because as mentioned before, lighting candles makes my room feel so light and airy and cozy at any season of the year.

Below these cubicles, as you can see I have these white cloth cubes that act as a storage in my Ikea Kallax. The first one to the left holds my pyjamas and lounge pants for the season, the middle cloth cube holds my crewnecks and hoodies/sweaters, and the 3rd one holds my purses and belts!

Checkout my youtube channel where you’ll see how I decorated my Ikea kallax when I first got it, and how versatile it is to change it up in your space! I would highly recommend getting one.
